do you think dean just starts buying cas things like socks or pens or jars filled with seeds that cas can plant. and cas doesn’t get it. doesn’t understand why dean is buying and giving him things. the next time dean offers cas a new pack of socks, cas looks down at them and asks quietly “why?” and dean feels like his heart is going to burst out of his ribs and he can’t find a way to say the whole truth encompassing how he really feels, so instead he says the core of it “because that’s what family does, they look out for each other and get things for each other” and cas looks up at dean, frowning, as he says “I don’t have anything for you though” and dean shakes his head with a soft smile as he says “it’s not about the give and take, cas. it’s not about owing or obligation to repay. it’s just… what family does, because they care about each other. no strings attached” and something about that must strike a chord in cas because the angels face softens into the most fond and gentle expression as his fingers smooth over the cotton of the socks as he murmurs “thank you dean”
